A new link between biomarkers and weight loss

Weight loss diets can seem like a dime a dozen. Millions of Americans struggle with weight loss each year, causing us to become frustrated when we do not succeed with the latest fad diet. How do we know which diet will work for us? A study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has discovered two biomarkers that can be analyzed to determine which dietary patterns are your best bet for weight loss. Particularly useful for people with prediabetes or diabetes, monitoring fasting blood glucose levels and fasting insulin levels can help your doctor decide which diet is right for you.

Approximately 29.1 million Americans have diabetes, with an additional 86 million being considered prediabetic, meaning their blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Achieving a healthy weight through diet and exercise is known to reduce the risk of developing diabetes in prediabetics, as well as help control blood glucose levels in those already diagnosed with diabetes. The struggle that many people face is how to lose this weight.

The study found that a diet that included fruits, vegetables, and whole grains led to the most weight loss for adults with prediabetes. For those with type 2 diabetes, a diet lower in carbohydrates and rich in plant-based healthy fats was the most effective.

So what’s the bottom line? The path to weight loss is individualized, and fasting blood glucose levels and fasting insulin levels are two biomarkers that can help doctors and dietitians determine which diet is best for you.
