Ditching the Diet Mentality – Part Three

March Monthly Newsletter – Special Series

Find out the facts behind popular diets in our four-part series.

Morsel of the Month
We are back with Part Three in our series on popular diets. Over the past few years, plant-based diets have been gaining in popularity. If you’re feeling veggie-curious, you may be wondering what plant-based even means and if it is right for you. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of plant-based. Some people use that term interchangeably with vegan. At Athens Nutrition, we mean making plants the focus and star of your plate. In fact, if you followed the Choose My Plate guidelines of making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, we would consider that pretty plant-focused. Making plants the focus of your eating plan can provide you with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. However, just because something is vegan does not mean it is healthy. (We are looking at you, Impossible Whoppers and Oreos). People may choose to limit their animal products for a variety of reasons, including religious, ethical and environmental. In our blog post, we are only addressing health benefits and possible limitations. No matter your eating style, we are proponents of including a wide variety of plant foods in your diet.

Check out our blog post for more information on a spectrum of plant-based diets, including vegetarian, vegan, Mediterranean and DASH diets.

Download the free What’s on Your Plate handout on our website for help on filling half of your plate with plants.

Look for our final installment of our special series on diets in two weeks. We will be discussing the Athens Nutrition way, based on mindful and intuitive eating.
