Find out which foods help support a healthy immune system

Most of us know that our risk of catching a cold or flu increases in the cooler weather, and this year, we are all feeling extra cautious due to the ongoing risk of COVID-19 infection. We are taking precautions by washing our hands frequently and wearing our masks, but many people wonder if there is something else they can do to stay well. Marketers know this too and there is no shortage of “immune-boosting” supplements and foods available for purchase. Buyer beware – at best, these products are harmless and just a waste of money, but at worst, they could actually do more harm than good. Before using any product promising to boost your immune system (including vitamins!), you should check with your doctor to make sure it is right for you.

However, there are some things you can do to help support a healthy immune system. The first way, and our favorite, is by eating a balanced diet. Include plenty of colorful vegetables and fruits, lean protein, whole grains and healthy fats. Eating adequate amounts of vitamins A, C, D, E and zinc is beneficial to overall health, but we advocate meeting your needs through food first, and discussing any vitamin supplementation with a doctor or dietitian. In addition to nutrition, both sleep and stress management play an important role in supporting your immune system. Aim to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep nightly and find non-food coping tools to help you relax, such as walking, deep breathing, crafting or dancing.

Check out these recipes that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support your immune system:
sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A and a very good source of – vitamin C – try them in this curry coconut stew
