Hosting a Healthier BBQ, Lighten up Your Summer Party

Monthly Newsletter July 10, 2019
Morsel of the Month
The sun is shining and it’s time to gather around the grill with a refreshing drink. For many of us, summer is synonymous with BBQs and pool parties, but getting together with friends and family does not mean you have to abandon your healthy eating goals. Take advantage of the available fresh summer produce to create a delicious spread. Start your party with a delicious mocktail by making a fruit shrub to mix with seltzer or simply cut a bunch of your favorite fruits and infuse them in a pitcher of ice water. Instead of chips and dip, why not put out a plate of “fresh from the garden” cucumbers, snap peas, peppers and radishes and homemade or store bought hummus. Add grilled vegetable skewers to the grill alongside turkey burgers, chicken breast or shrimp. Lighten up your potato or pasta salad by using an herb-infused vinaigrette in place of a heavy mayo-based dressing. You can even grill fruit, such as peaches or pineapple, for a tasty dessert served with some honey-sweetened Greek yogurt.
