Don’t Fear the Fat

And other heart-healthy tips

Morsel of the Month

We’ve all been there. You felt great about getting your annual physical until you got the results of your blood work back. Now your doctor is telling you that you have elevated cholesterol and maybe high blood sugar too. You don’t want to start medication, so you start Googling. What you find can be so confusing. Are eggs good or bad? What about cheese? Should you go keto or plant-based? Should you take an omega-3 supplement? Switch to coconut oil or avocado oil or vegan butter? Do you cut out carbs and start a fiber gummy? What about that greens powder you saw on social media?

The truth is you don’t have to give up all of your favorite foods to manage your cholesterol and blood sugar. We know it might sound boring, but having balance in your overall diet is the most important step. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, found in avocados, olives, nuts, seeds and fatty fish, can be beneficial to our heart health; whereas saturated fats found in butter, marbled meats and coconut oil have the potential to raise our LDL cholesterol. Athens dietitians can help you choose the heart-healthy fats most of the time (with some space for buttery cookies too!) and help you create delicious menu plans from our 400+ heart-healthy recipes. We also like to focus on all of the tasty foods you can increase in your eating plan, like fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, that can help to lower your cholesterol and blood sugar. Healthy eating can be delicious and can incorporate all of your family favorites.
