Banish Boredom Eating

Am I Hungry or Am I Bored?

Morsel of the Month

Starting with Halloween and straight through the end of the year, most of us stock our homes with treats. Whether it’s candy for trick-or-treaters, our aunt’s famous pumpkin pie or our favorite holiday cookies, the end of the year is often celebrated with sweet desserts.

At Athens Nutrition, we firmly believe that all foods fit; in fact, we have a pretty great pumpkin pie recipe. However, we also believe in savoring and enjoying all of our foods from Brussels sprouts to cake. Eating dessert should be a pleasurable experience, not a guilt-filled one. When you get the urge to have a sweet, pause for a moment and sense if you want it because you think it will be delicious, or if you’re angry, stressed, sad or bored and are trying to distract yourself. If you think it will be delicious, plate it up and enjoy.

If you check in with yourself and you are bored, we asked Megan and Camille, therapists at Calm Mind Therapy, to offer some suggestions.Next month, we will talk about how to eat mindfully with all of your senses to get maximum pleasure from your foods. If you are ready to get off of the diet roller coaster in time for the holiday season, check out our Weight Loss Without Diets signature plan.
