Even if you have been out of school for years (or decades), September can still feel like a fresh start. We are back into our routines and maybe we are also ready to get back into our kitchens. With our beach days and vacations (unfortunately) behind us, we can add more structure to our weeks. But if you have children, you know how difficult it can be to work around their many activities. This is where meal prep comes in. 

Sure, you can make Instagram-worthy meals and snacks in matching containers (shout-out to those former kids who loved shopping for fresh school supplies). But for the rest of us, meal prep can be as easy or as complicated as we want it to be. 

Our top tips are:

  • look ahead at your calendar so you know which days you may need a crockpot meal or tuna salad sandwiches
  • make a grocery list so you don’t forget what you need for the week (then you only have to go once!)
  • take shortcuts where you can – there’s no shame in bagged salads, baby carrots, frozen vegetables, rinsed canned beans or parboiled brown rice
  • come up with a loose rotation (chicken Mondays, taco Tuesday, etc.)
