Morsel of the Month

It’s impossible not to notice that protein is having a moment. What was once the domain of body builders is now highlighted on the front of everything from cereal to ice cream to chips. If you’re a woman aged 50+, you might be wondering if you’re getting enough protein and why you should even care.

Protein is one of three macronutrients (the other two are carbohydrates and fats). The macronutrients are food components that we need in relatively larger amounts for optimal health. Micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals, are needed in smaller amounts. Protein is important for a lot of things in our bodies, including enzymes, immune function, hormones and lean muscle mass.  Protein can also help with our satiety, so that we do not feel hungry shortly after a meal. Protein can be found in a wide variety of foods, including meat, poultry, fish and seafood, eggs, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds, soy, and dairy products.

How much protein you need is dependent on a number of factors, including your age, body size, physical activity and other medical conditions. Certain people may be required to restrict protein, while others may need more than average. For most people it’s a smart idea to get a good protein source (along with carbohydrates and heart healthy fats) at each meal.

If you want to know how much protein is right for you, make an appointment with an Athens dietitian today.
