Two Easy Ways to Save Money and Improve Your Health: Keep Cooking at Home!

September Monthly Newsletter

Morsel of the Month
During the pandemic, many of us started cooking at home more often. Once restaurants started opening back up again, maybe you found yourself falling out of your new cooking habit. It can be tempting to meet friends for dinner, knowing that someone else is doing the cooking and cleaning for you. However, it’s certainly cheaper, healthier and can be even more delicious to cook most of your meals at home.

According to the USDA, about half of Americans’ food budget is spent on food away from home. We all know how much more expensive a sandwich or salad at a restaurant is compared to the ones we make at home. Imagine how much further you could stretch your dollars if you decided to cook more frequently.

Eating out more often is associated with lower intakes of fruits and vegetables and higher intakes of saturated fat, sodium and calories. According to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, about 90 percent of Americans do not meet the target for vegetables. That’s only 1 in 10 of us eating enough vegetables! Eating more meals at home will help increase the number of veggies you are eating and with them, higher intakes of fiber and a host of important nutrients.

Even though most of us know that eating at home is cheaper and healthier, it needs to be easy, fast and delicious in order to motivate us to make it part of our routine. At Athens Nutrition, we happen to love cooking and we are passionate about making healthier food simple to prepare and delicious to eat!

NEW Athens Nutrition Virtual Culinary Nutrition Workshop for Women 50(ish) starts this October!

Join us for our NEW Virtual Culinary Nutrition Workshop launching October 5th. This signature course is designed to address the cooking, eating, nutritional and weight challenges of women approaching or moving beyond the benchmark year of 50.

Our 4-week culinary nutrition workshop has a food-first focus and will be taught by Judy Matusky, Registered and Licensed Dietitian and Culinary Nutritionist. You will meet virtually, as a small group, “in” Judy’s kitchen. Judy will be cooking fast and light recipes (with a Mediterranean focus), reviewing food products so you can stock your healthiest kitchen. She will help you organize simple menu plans, make food shopping and meal prep as easy as possible, and answer any questions you might have on the best meal plans for weight loss, cholesterol reduction and blood sugar management. All sessions will be live but they will also be recorded so you can watch them anytime.
