Why Should I Work with a Registered Dietitian?

July 5, 2022 Weekly Newsletter

Can’t I follow a Health Coach on TikTok instead?

Morsel of the Month

We know it’s confusing out there. Is coffee “good” or “bad”? Should I take supplements? What’s the best way to manage my digestive upset? You’ll find a lot of conflicting information depending on who you ask and who you follow on social media.

Did you know that anyone can call themselves a health coach or a nutritionist? There are certification programs for health coaches and degrees for nutritionists, but these titles are not regulated and can be used by anyone who wants to give you advice about your health. However, the terms Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN) are regulated and anyone who holds these titles must

  • Get a four-year degree which includes a specially designed, accredited nutrition curriculum.
  • Complete an extensive supervised program of practice at a health care facility, foodservice organization and/or community agency.
  • Pass a rigorous registration exam.
  • Maintain continuing education credits throughout their career.

Additionally, in the state of Pennsylvania, all RDs and RDNs must also be licensed. Dietitians are bound by evidence-based guidelines, meaning they are not going to steer you toward the latest fads. Instead, RDs and RDNs use science-backed guidelines to help you achieve your goals in a way that is individualized to your lifestyle. It might sound less exciting, but it is a more realistic and sustainable path to your health goals.

At Athens Nutrition, we offer virtual visits with registered dietitians from the convenience of your home, office or quiet outdoor setting. Schedule your appointment today.
