Spring Clean Your Pantry: Stock healthy ingredients to make cooking simple and delicious

March Monthly Newsletter

Morsel of the Month
Spring is the perfect time to clean out your pantry. You may be feeling inspired to lighten up your meals as the days get longer, and spring flowers and vegetables start to make an appearance. The building blocks to all healthy, delicious meals are good ingredients. If you have a well-stocked pantry and fridge, you can put together fast, nourishing meals for yourself and your family, even on weekdays!
First, clean out all expired products. If you have the space, take everything out of your pantry and fridge and wipe down all of the shelves. Next, take a critical look at what is left. Toss the processed snacks, such as chips, cookies and sugary cereals. If they are not in the house, they will not tempt you to eat them. Next, take a look at your canned goods. If you are used to buying regular beans or diced tomatoes, next time try low sodium or no-added-salt versions. (In the meantime, you can drain and rinse the beans you already have to remove some of the sodium). If you have canned vegetables, next time consider buying frozen. They are lower in sodium and more of their nutrients are retained in their processing. If you buy jarred sauces, keep an eye on the added sugars and sodium sneaking into their ingredient list. Want to know more about stocking your pantry and fridge?
